At Memorial Park, conservation is more than a goal – it’s a daily commitment carried out by dedicated teams working across landscapes, habitats, and seasons! From native plant care to invasive species management, each effort plays a role in preserving and enhancing the Park’s ecological health. Take a look at some of the work happening behind the scenes in recent week.

Exploring and Learning: A Visit to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Our Conservation team recently visited the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, where they explored native gardens and habitat spaces alongside other professionals in the field. Experiences like these provide valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, discover new approaches, and bring fresh inspiration back to Memorial Park.

By learning from peer institutions and leaders in native plant conservation, the team continues to refine strategies that support resilient, thriving ecosystems right here in Houston.

Supporting Native Habitats Across the Park

Spring growth has been in full swing, and our Native Habitats team has been hard at work ensuring that landscapes across the Park flourish. From vibrant blooms to fruiting trees, these efforts support not just plant life, but the wildlife that depends on it.

• Pocket prairie maintenance: Regular weeding in areas like the South Restroom bed in Eastern Glades helps newly planted species establish strong roots and thrive without competition.

• Prairie preservation: Along the future Memorial Groves installation, contractors have treated invasive grasses across 10 acres of prairie. This targeted work protects native species, including the striking Sanguine Coneflower, ensuring they continue to flourish.

• Forest understory restoration: Native plum trees have had an especially successful season thanks to forest thinning and the removal of invasive tree species. These efforts improve light and space for native plants while providing food for birds and small mammals.

Together, these initiatives strengthen biodiversity and help maintain the Park’s natural balance.

Caring for Native Garden Beds

Our Horticulture team plays a vital role in maintaining the beauty and health of curated spaces throughout the Park. Their work includes:

• Pruning native plants to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth

• Removing non-native species to ensure native grasses and flowers have the space they need to thrive

These ongoing efforts keep garden beds both visually stunning and ecologically meaningful, showcasing the importance of native plants in urban landscapes.

Building Skills for Tree Care

Healthy trees are a cornerstone of Memorial Park, and caring for them requires both knowledge and precision. After participating in a Women’s Tree Climbing Workshop, our Arboriculture team has been sharpening their climbing skills.

This training allows team members to safely access tree canopies, where they can selectively remove limbs and branches to:

• Improve tree health

• Reduce safety risks

• Support long-term canopy resilience

Investing in these skills ensures that the Park’s trees continue to thrive for generations to come.
