Memorial Park’s conservation team plays a huge role in preserving and enhancing the Park’s ecological health. Take a look at some of the work happening behind the scenes in recent weeks.

Arboriculture: Keeping Our Trees Safe and Strong

The Arboriculture team has focused on summertime pruning to lift trees’ lower branches from impeding with walkways and mow zones for our Park users and mowing staff.

In addition, crews are actively identifying and removing hazardous limbs to reduce risk. Some of this work requires specialized equipment, such as tree lifts, allowing staff to safely reach high into the canopy. When storms or heavy rains bring down trees, the team responds quickly, clearing impacted areas to restore access for Park users.

Native Habitat: Supporting Biodiversity

The Native Habitat teams have been focused on taking care of new prairie seedling establishment from a winter seeding project on the Kinder Land Bridges. Conservation Technicians trained to spot invasive species amongst native plants spray precise amounts of herbicide to kill back targeted invasive species.

Across the Park in native savanna habitats, the team works diligently to selectively cut back plants that compete for resources, these cut backs support growth of different native plants, increasing the diversity in these savanna habitats,

Horticulture: Seasonal Care in Bloom

Horticulture staff have been hard at work giving native garden beds a pre-summer time glow up. Optimal growing conditions that we have experienced as of late, has allowed for robust growth of native grasses and forbs (and also weeds!). The team has spent time weeding and mulching gardens beds around the park, including Eastern Glades Parking Lot, Seymour Lieberman Trail and behind the Running Trails Center.

Next time you visit, take a moment to look a little closer. The blooms, the trees, and the wildlife you see are all part of an ongoing story of care, collaboration, and conservation!
