Cares Days
The Park Operations Team hosted multiple CARES days in recent weeks. Tasks have included cleaning up the forested areas and chipping snagged branches along Crestwood Drive, clearing the storm gutters along the Outer Loop Trail and repairing the parking area along the split rail south of Memorial Drive.
Park Tours
The Association of Environmental Engineering Geologists visited Memorial Park for a tour led by experts from the MPC team. More than a dozen participants had the opportunity to learn about the buildout and care of Kinder Land Bridge and Cyvia & Melvyn Wolff Prairie!
Many of the native garden beds were planted this winter, which means there are open spaces for unwanted plants, including nutsedge, to grow and compete with native plants. To limit the growth of these unwanted plants, the horticulture team selectively and meticulously applies herbicide directly to the plant. This method helps to apply the chemical directly on the plant to focus treatment on invasives.
Mexican plum trees and Eastern red bud trees were transplanted from an area that will become a parking lot within the Memorial Groves to an area that will be revived as a forested habitat.
The fruit of the work done across the Park is breaking through! Plants are germinating like these grasses and forbs in a savanna habitat.
Some Native Habitat spaces require special equipment because they are a unique size and space. The team rented a mower to achieve a mow height above 6 inches, an optimal height for the native grasses and flowers to prosper. Through strategic maneuvers, the Native Habitats Team was able to mow down and mulch last year’s growth, making room for the spring.
The Turf & Grounds team sodded St. Augustine grass in areas where the Seymour Lieberman Trail drainage system was improved. These areas are now thriving thanks to their dedicated efforts!
Preparations for the Memorial Groves Ground Breaking included digging up stumps, laying the soil for the event and setting up banners by the Maintenance & Mechanic and Turf & Grounds teams.
