If you’re a runner in Houston, chances are you’ve heard of Memorial Park—a sprawling urban oasis that is home to some of the best running trails in the city! Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or just starting your fitness journey, Memorial Park offers an expansive track area and upwards of 30 miles of trails that cater to all interests and abilities. Its natural beauty, well-maintained paths and active community make it a must-visit spot for runners.
Here is a guide to some of the running opportunities at Memorial Park:
1. The Seymour Lieberman Exer-Trail (3-mile Loop)
The Seymour Lieberman Exer-Trail, a highly popular pedestrian-only, three-mile loop, is perhaps the most iconic trail at Memorial Park. Cross over ravine bridges and run or walk beneath the shade of trees. There is plenty to see along the loop – you can catch a glimpse of the golf course, observe Park visitors using the tennis facilities or warming up at the stretching deck, and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature all around you. You’ll encounter plenty of fellow runners along the way for an energetic and motivating atmosphere!
What to Expect:
- A well-groomed, well-lit trail made of decomposed granite.
- Water stations and mile markers strategically placed along the 3-mile route.
- A mix of sun and shade, perfect for both morning and evening runs.
- Several landmarks and areas to meet and/or warm up.
- Access to restrooms at key points.
- No bikes, scooters or vehicles—pedestrians only!
- Plenty of parking (both free and paid) in lots and on the street surrounding the loop.
2. Running Complex
The Running Complex is a major programmatic hub and access point on the south side of Memorial Park, nestled into the southwestern arm of the Kinder Land Bridge & Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Prairie. With amenities including the 400-meter Roy H. Cullen Timing Track, health-forward Vibrant Café, and a visitor center with an event plaza and terrace, the Running Complex is designed to be a central spot for all types of park users, while serving as a gateway to add some distance to your run and enjoy other areas of the Park, like the Bayou Wilds trails, Picnic Loop, and the views from atop the Kinder Land Bridge.
What to Expect:
- Features the five-lane, 400-meter Roy H. Cullen Timing Track with rubber composite surface.
- Includes stretching areas, pavilions, restrooms and water stations to visit or gather before or after a run.
- Provides access to Kinder Land Bridge, Picnic Loop, Bayou Wilds trail heads and the South Land Bridge Trail, which encircles the Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Prairie.
- Staffed Visitor Center with refreshments including beverages and fuel, like energy gels and bars.
- A Café with healthy food and beverage service, equipped with Wi-Fi.
- Abundant paid parking available in nearby lots.
3. The Bayou Wilds Trails
Memorial Park’s Bayou Wilds offer a more rugged running experience, perfect for trail runners looking for a challenge. These trails run through wooded areas, offering an escape from the urban bustle. While not as well-known as the main trails, the Bayou Wilds provide a bit of solitude and consist of multiple color-coded trails that are inter-connected and offer a range of distances and difficulty levels. The terrain is a bit more uneven, so be prepared for a more adventurous run.
What to Expect:
- Narrow, dirt-packed trails winding through wooded areas.
- A quieter, less trafficked alternative to the main loops and trails.
- Ideal for experienced runners who want a break from pavement.
- Trail heads can be found along the South Land Bridge Trail, which encircles the Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Prairie.
- Some elevation changes, making it a bit more challenging.
- Ample parking (both free and paid) in nearby lots at Picnic Loop and at the Running Complex.
