Preparing for Fall Starts with Summer Stewardship

While many Park visitors are enjoying the final weeks of summer, Memorial Park’s Conservation and Maintenance teams are laying the groundwork for a successful fall season. Despite the heat, crews across the Park continue important stewardship efforts that enhance safety, improve habitat health, and support the long-term resilience of our natural spaces.

Caring for Our Urban Forest

The Arboriculture Team has been focused on improving safety and accessibility throughout the Park. Crews have been lifting tree canopies to provide additional clearance for park users, utilizing specialized equipment to reach high branches and remove hazardous limbs. The team has also been removing invasive vines that can weaken trees and impact their long-term health.

Supporting Native Landscapes

The Horticulture Team continues its dedication to maintaining the Park’s native garden beds. Throughout the summer, staff have been tackling invasive vines and persistent weeds that compete with native plants for resources. As temperatures climb, the team ensures that both staff and plants stay hydrated, providing supplemental watering to support healthy growth during Houston’s hottest months.

Managing Habitat for Future Growth

In Memorial Park’s native habitat areas, crews have been mowing, trimming, and removing undesirable Sesbania species as part of ongoing habitat management efforts. These labor-intensive projects help prepare the landscape for upcoming fall planting initiatives that will enhance ecological health and biodiversity throughout the Park.

Wildlife Spotlight

Even in the height of summer, the Park continues to provide habitat for a variety of wildlife. Recently, moths have been frequent visitors to the Memorial Park Conservancy lath house, offering a reminder of the many species that depend on the Park’s diverse ecosystems.

Thank a Crew Member!

The “dog days” of summer can make outdoor conservation work especially challenging, but the progress made today helps ensure the Park thrives tomorrow. Whether they’re pruning trees, maintaining garden beds, managing habitats, or monitoring wildlife, our teams are committed to caring for Memorial Park every day. The next time you see a crew member working in the Park, give them a thumbs up and a quick thank you for helping keep this treasured greenspace healthy, safe, and beautiful for all.
