Supporting Healthy Habitats and Safe Park Access

As summer continues in Memorial Park, our Conservation team remains hard at work caring for the landscapes, waterways, and natural areas that make the Park such a unique urban greenspace.

Caring for Our Urban Forest

The Arboriculture team continues to monitor tree health throughout the Park. As part of this ongoing work, crews assess trees for potential hazards and remove dead or declining trees when necessary to help reduce risk for visitors. You may also see team members along trails and walking routes pruning low-hanging limbs to maintain safe and comfortable access for Park users.

Managing Native Habitats

Our Native Habitat team is actively maintaining restored natural areas and spring plantings to help native species thrive while keeping invasive plants under control. Recently, the team has been working at Hines Lake, selectively removing vegetation in targeted wetland areas to support water movement throughout the lake system. This type of management helps maintain ecological function while supporting the health of the surrounding habitat.

Improving Water Flow in Wetland Areas

The Horticulture team has also been busy tending native garden beds across the Park, removing undesirable plants that compete with native species for resources. In addition, crews have spent time working within the stream corridor in Bush Grove near the Seymour Lieberman Trail, selectively removing wetland vegetation to improve water movement between the drainage channel and adjacent areas of the Park. These efforts help maintain healthy hydrology and support the long-term resilience of our ecosystems.

Stewardship in Action

Conservation work in Memorial Park often happens behind the scenes, but these ongoing stewardship efforts are essential to preserving the Park’s natural resources while ensuring visitors can safely enjoy its trails, woodlands, wetlands, and gardens. From monitoring tree health to managing habitats and improving water flow, our teams are dedicated to protecting and enhancing the Park’s ecological health year-round.
