When Linda Padon returned to Houston in 2016 after a 25-year absence, she was excited to settle in the Crestwood neighborhood, which borders the eastern edge of Memorial Park. Shortly before her move, the Houston City Council had unanimously voted to approve the Memorial Park Master Plan, and Linda would soon witness her new “backyard” transform into a world-class Park.
Linda fondly recalls the opening of the Clay Family Eastern Glades as a “magical” experience; the gloom and isolation of the early pandemic days lifted as she stepped through the newly opened Blossom Plaza entrance. Thoughts of masking and donning gloves quickly slipped away as she explored the expansive great lawns, landscaping, and boardwalks flanking Hines Lake. “I felt I had been transported to a European landscape,” Linda recalled, exclaiming that the experience left her with a profound sense of joy and pride for the city she loves.
When Memorial Park Conservancy resumed hosting events, Linda had an opportunity to deepen her engagement with the Park she already loved. Meeting other members and staff, she gained a deeper understanding of the role the Conservancy plays in stewarding Memorial Park. “As I became more involved,” Linda explained, “I was increasingly impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm of the MPC team and their vision for the Park, ecological restoration, and community involvement.” Inspired by the generosity of the donors who helped set the Park’s visionary 10-Year Plan in motion, Linda has increased her involvement with Memorial Park Conservancy by sponsoring events, joining our Membership program, becoming a Park Visionary Member (a giving society that supports the Conservancy with a 5-year financial commitment), and, most recently, joining the Board of Directors.
“I have long believed that the charitable nature of Houstonians sets us apart as a genuinely great city,” Linda continued, adding, “That extraordinary spirit of giving is on full display at the Park for the benefit of all of Houston, and it fills my heart.” Whether you are a member, a volunteer, or a one-time or recurring donor, your involvement matters.
