2026 Trail Rider Park Impact:
Every year, more than 3,000 trail riders saddle up and ride in from all directions to join the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Downtown Parade. Approximately 1,300 miles are covered by all Trail Riders, a tradition that’s been passing through Memorial Park for decades!
Riders will begin arriving on Friday, February 27 into Memorial Park. Memorial Drive will remain open, but drivers should expect traffic delays throughout the weekend.
Please note: the following Park areas will be impacted from Thursday, February 26 to mid-afternoon on Saturday, February 28 to accommodate Trail Rider groups:

The Cullen Running Trails Center will be closed to the public from 2 p.m. Thursday, February 26 – Saturday, February 28. The Visitor Services team will remain available via email at comments@memorialparkconservancy.org.

Every year, as February draws to a close, Memorial Park becomes a key passageway for one of Houston’s most cherished traditions—the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Trail Ride. As the city readies itself for rodeo season, the park plays host to hundreds of trail riders and wagons making their way into town, continuing a tradition that dates back more than 70 years.
A Journey Through History
The rodeo’s trail rides trace their origins to 1952 when a small group of riders set out to recreate the spirit of the Old West by riding into Houston for the annual rodeo. What started with just a few riders has since grown into a massive event, with nearly a dozen official trail rides and thousands of participants traveling from all corners of Texas! These rides, spanning hundreds of miles and lasting days or even weeks, culminate in a grand procession through Memorial Park before joining the Downtown Rodeo Parade.
A Unique Spectacle in the Park
For Memorial Park visitors, the arrival of the trail riders is a sight to behold! Riders, dressed in traditional Western attire, lead covered wagons along the trails, while families and spectators gather to watch a living tribute to Texas heritage. It’s a moment where history and modern city life converge in a uniquely Houstonian way.

Please note: certain Park areas typically close from the Thursday before the Downtown Rodeo Parade to mid-afternoon on that Saturday to accommodate Trail Rider groups. This generally includes the following areas:
- Running Complex Parking Lot & Restrooms
- Picnic Loop Parking Lot & Restrooms
- Commuter Trail from Picnic Loop to the Running Trails Center
- Living Bridge
- West Memorial Loop Dr.
The Cullen Running Trails Center is also closed to the public these days. The Visitor Services team remains available via email at comments@memorialparkconservancy.org.
