Memorial Park Conservancy along with presenting sponsors Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and Buffalo Soldiers National Museum invite you to join us for an important discussion as a part of a new series called Park Conversations.

This evening’s conversation is also made possible by program partners Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin (District C), County Precinct Four Commissioner R. Jack Cagle, the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and Uptown Houston.

The Houston Mutiny & Riots: 105 Years Later

Tuesday August 23rd marks the 105th anniversary of the Camp Logan Mutiny and Houston Riots of 1917. This event memorializes the legacy of the 24th Infantry Regiment by recognizing the discrimination and violence they endured and tells the story of the resulting tragedy of August 23, 1917. All members of the 24th were tried in military court without adequate representation or allowed due process to appeal their conviction. This second tragedy, an unfair trial, resulted in hangings and life sentences for many of these soldiers, which ultimately led the U.S. Military to reform how it administers capital punishment convictions, including the requirement of an appeal process.

As the steward of the historic site of Camp Logan, a WWI training camp which is today’s Memorial Park, Memorial Park Conservancy seeks to share the stories of Memorial Park, with this tragic day being one of not only local but national significance.

This evening’s Park Conversation begins with a short excerpt from the documentary Mutiny on the Bayou and will be followed by a panel discussion that includes descendants of those involved in the 1917 event, legal experts leading the modern exoneration efforts for the members of the 24th Infantry Regiment, and local community leaders.

Thank you to our presenting sponsors and program partners for your leadership in sharing this important story.
