That summer\, African American soldiers of the 3rd Battalion\, 24th Infantry Regiment\, one of the Army’s four “Buffalo Soldiers” regiments\, arrived to guard the camp’s construction. \nIn the aftermath of the tragedy on August 23\, 1917\, the battalion was disarmed and transferred. What followed was the largest court-martial in American military history\, resulting in the execution of 19 soldiers and life sentences for 63 others. \nThat verdict stood until November 13\, 2023\, when the U.S. Army formally set aside the convictions of all 110 soldierstried in the case. The Army also committed to correcting the soldiers’ service records\, making their descendants eligible for benefits their families had been denied for a century. \n  \nExhibit Details:\nPresented in partnership with the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum\, the installation uses onsite audio stories to bring this history to life throughout Clay Family Eastern Glades. \n\nWhere: Clay Family Eastern Glades\, 552 East Memorial Loop Drive\, Houston\, TX 77007\nWhen: August 20 – September 27\nCost: Free and open to the public\nBring headphones. The audio is designed for personal\, uninterrupted listening\nParking: Paid parking available onsite at a rate of $2 for 3 hours. Free parking is available in adjacent lots.
